The
Bio's of the Great Stan Lee and Ray Patterson
|
|
Now
81, Stan Lee
remains Marvel's chairman emeritus and while he no longer works
on Spider-Man comic books, he still writes the character's newspaper serial.
Despite the fact that he made his mark with super heroes as
diverse as the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men and the Silver Surfer, Lee is
proud to go down in history as the dad to Peter Parker and his arachnophilic
alter ego. It's a comic book legend of enduring resonance: the story
of how, 40 years ago, a headstrong writer named Stan Lee created the character
of Spider-Man--over the protests of his superiors at Marvel Comics--and
in doing so, ushered in Marvel's golden era. By inventing a nerdy high
schooler named Peter Parker and giving him a secret life as a conflicted
superhero, Lee brought a new level of sophistication and emotional depth
to what had been considered a kids' genre. When the company recently took
a readers' poll to determine the hundred best Marvel comics of all time,
the issue of Amazing Stories marking Spidey's debut landed at number one. |
Ray Patterson was
born on November 23, 1911. He began his illustrious animation career at
Charles Mintz Studios in 1930. He moved to Disney in the late-'30s where
he created animation art for such features as PINOCCHIO, FANTASIA and DUMBO
and shorts like BONE TROUBLE and PLUTO'S PLAYMATE. In the early-'40s he
joined MGM as an animator in Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera's Tom & Jerry
Animation Art unit. Ray remained a top animator on the classic Tom
& Jerry shorts through 1954. Their studio produced TV commercials
for many years before moving into series production in the Sixties with
shows like MARVEL SUPERHEROS and SPIDER-MAN at another studio. He
moved to Hanna-Barbera in the late-'70s. He became H/B's Vice President
of Animation Art Direction in 1985 and held that post until his retirement
in 1993. My experiences he was always the gentleman - hospitable,
friendly and warm. |
